High heels and swaying hemlines! Minna Parikka is one of the top names among Finnish shoe designers. Her highly feminine footwear is now sold in ten countries, with the flagship store in Helsinki. Minna Parikka’s red high heels can now also be seen on one of the stamps of the Fashion miniature sheet. They are accompanied by beautiful shoes by Julia Lundsten which are depicted on the next stamp.
Lundsten’s stylish signature wooden heels have won the admiration even of the king of shoe designers, Manolo Blahnik, who has called them “divine” and “perfect”. The wooden-heeled pump shown on the stamp is made of fish skin. Lundsten’s creations are sold in Tokyo, London, New York and other great cities.
The miniature sheet features elegant accessories in the form of the Lumi handbag designed by Sanna Kantola. Sanna Kantola and Bruno Beaugrand founded the Lumi brand in New York nine years ago, and today Lumi bags are sold in 25 countries.
Fashion designer Jasmin Santanen lives and works in Paris. This spring she unveiled at the Paris fashion festival a luxurious open party outfit, which has now been immortalised on a stamp.
This year’s spring collection also includes an outfit designer by Tuomas Laitinen and his sister, artist Anna Laitinen, the rear view of which is shown on the Fashion miniature sheet. This angle was chosen because of the outfit’s amusing “penguin cut”. A collection by the Laitinens won shared first place in the prestigious French Hyères fashion design competition in France in 2006. Today the LAITINEN accessory brand is sold in France, Japan, Hong Kong and elsewhere. The woman in purple on the left-hand edge of the miniature sheet is a filler picture. Laura Laine produced the illustrations for the miniature sheet.

Fashionable new stamp
Laura Laine has illustrated this miniature sheet with clothes, shoes and bags designed by Finnis. They are based on the lastest collections for spring 2009. These designes are examples of promising brands created with an internationak attitude, blodly led by designer.
The red shoes on the sheet are the work of Minna Parikka. Her time in the international arena has enabled her to produce well received collections. Her shoes are very feminine and individual. The stylish red dress is by Jasmin Santanen, a compolitan woman who has studied and taught in New York and Paris, who adds a touch of magic to every garment she creates.
Julia Lundsten creatively combines wood in her collection - Finnish brich and ecologically produced Brazilian hardwood. Her promising career began during her student days in London.
The bag is from a collection by Sanna Kantola. Her career path has taken her from Helsinki and back via New York. Her bags and other products are devoted to functionality and quality.
Clothing designer Tumas laitinen and his sister, Artist Anne Laitienen , created the purple dress shown on the stamp sheet. Their work together has yielded a small and appreciated collection, the manufacture of which will be kept in Finland as long as possible

Article published in
Canada's Stamp Details (Vol. XVIII No 1; January to March 2009)
Fireworks, lion dances, gold, and a splash of red for good luck! To the Chinese, no New Year display is too extravagant. After all, the parades and festivals that take place during China’s longest and most important celebration represent the shared hopes that good luck and prosperity will accompany the new cycle of the moon.
It’s also a special time for Canada Post, when ultra-creative stamp designs—topped off with gold foil and innovative printing techniques—are issued to celebrate what is widely credited as the oldest surviving calendar system in the world. This year, we honour the Year of the Ox: a time of stability, harmony and balance. The issue will be the first release in a new 12-year Lunar New Year series.
The international stamp was inspired by long traditions of Chinese art and Lunar New Year decor. “We featured a work of pottery, as the art form is heavily rooted in Chinese history,” explains Ivan Novotny, Vice President of Design at Toronto’s Taylor|Sprules Corporation. An ancient art form of Asian descent, pottery wares have been sculpted in China since the Paleolithic era. “We also chose it for its connection to the earth, since 2009 is the year of the Earth Ox,” adds Novotny. According to Chinese philosophy, everyone and everything is subject to the influence of the five elements: water, metal, earth, wood, and fire. The elements rotate every year, and each is associated with specific character traits: stability, industry and practicality in the case of earth element.
The spark that surrounds the Chinese character for “Ox” in the top-left corner of the international stamp evokes fireworks. Gold foil is applied to the spark, while clear foil and multi-level embossing techniques add shine and dimension to the pottery vase. Novotny notes, “There’s an interesting juxta-position between the traditional quality of the pottery and the modern flair of the design.”
The domestic stamp features an illustration of an Ox before a mountainous landscape. “The landscape and tan earth tones in the background speak again to this year’s element, earth,” explains Novotny. Plum blossoms—popular subjects in Chinese art and a common feature in Lunar New Year decor—are peppered throughout the background of the stamp and pane of 25. These flowers are indigenous to China and the country’s national flower. Blooming in the early spring snow, they symbolize life, rebirth and adversity overcome. The Ox and the blossoms, adorned with clear foil, shine in the light, while multi-level embossing techniques add depth and dimension. Alain Leduc, Manager of Stamp Design and Production at Canada Post, adds, “With the image so full of fine details, the embossing in the design is extremely intricate.”
Even the long, scroll-like shape of the new souvenir sheet—a format that will remain standard throughout the series—is rooted in Chinese tradition, as decorative scrolls are widely believed to have their origin in China. “It was a challenge to marry these two stamps so different stylistically on the souvenir sheet,” notes Novotny. “But they were harmonized through a heavy use of the lucky colour red.” The Chinese characters that run vertically down the souvenir sheet list all 12 animals of the zodiac, fading from one year to the next as they appear in the lunar cycle— a feature that reinforces the scroll concept.
With its insightful blend of time-honoured customs and modern flair, this issue is a fitting tribute to an ancient tradition that is well-known and celebrated around the world today—not to mention an excellent kick-off to a new 12-year stamp cycle.

On December 27th, Canada Post will get an early start to the New Year with a brand new set of definitive stamps. The domestic rate remains unchanged for 2008, and these vibrant new designs are sure to be appreciated by collectors and non-collectors alike. The new designs feature a new image of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the Canadian flag over lighthouses coast-to-coast and the flower stamp series highlighting orchids.
The beautiful picture of The Queen was taken May 19, 2005 in Saskatoon during her nine-day Royal Visit to Canada. On that day, a class of students from Bjorkdale School traveled to see The Queen and brought a quilt bearing the Royal Cypher which they had used to raise funds for their journey. This quilt is pictured on the Official First Day Cover. Doreen Colonello of Gottschalk+Ash International worked with the photo taken by Ottawa's Headlight Inc. and shows the Queen in a relaxed and engaging atmosphere, as she enjoys her face-to-face meetings with Canadians.
In 2008 the Flag stamps will be featured alongside lighthouses in a variety of distinct Canadian landscapes. These stamps pay homage to the historical lighthouses across the country that serve as treasured reminders of Canada's nautical heritage.
Ontario's Point Clark was originally referred to as "Pine Point". This lighthouse stands 110-feet tall and was built between 1855 and 1859 to warn of the dangers posed by the reefs about two miles off Lake Huron's shoreline. Pachena Point is a headland located just south of Bamfield on Vancouver Island's west coast. The lighthouse's perilous reputation stems from its location, which is considered to be among the most dangerous stretches of Western coastline. Among Canada's most remote and least-often-seen lighthouses, is the lightouse found in the village of Warren Landing on the west bank of the Nelson just below Lake Winnipeg. Quebec's Cap-des-Rosiers lighthouse was completed in 1858 and at 34-metres high, is the tallest lighthouse in Canada and was named a National Historic Site in 1977. The Sambro Island lighthouse in Nova Scotia was built in 1758. This 44-foot interior granite tower holds the title of the oldest working lighthouse in North America. For immigrants and refugees arriving from the east, this lighthouse was often their first glimpse of Canada.
Danielle Trottier, Stamp Project Manager for the flower series Definitive says "the challenge we face every year is finding flowers native to Canada in the required colour scheme". When stamps have a white background, colour is a crucial element and because we aim to have the domestic rate stamp in the red tones, the U.S. rate stamp in the yellow tones and the International rate stamp in the blue/mauve tone, colour is an issue. This year's series will highlight Canadian Orchid Hybrids, with the Odontioda Island Red flower on the domestic rate stamp (52-cents). The U.S. rate stamp (96-cents) features the Potinara Fire Dancer, the oversize rate ($1.15) the Laeliocattleya Memoria Evelyn Light and the International rate ($1.60) the Masdevallia Kaleidoscope 'Conni'.

Some 3,000 years have passed since the first Olympic Games, but the lustre of this celebration remains unrivalled today. It is now, as it was then, the ultimate sporting goal—the pinnacle of athletic accomplishment.
Olympic and Paralympic emblems and mascots capture the values and essence of the Games and represent the people, geography and spirit of their home country. While this task can seem daunting in a country as diverse as Canada, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games has introduced a vibrant set of emblems and mascots that accomplish this goal with flair. As an Official Supplier to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Canada Post will issue five definitive stamps showcasing these dynamic symbols.
The Emblems
Of the two PERMANENT™ domestic rate stamps, one features the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games emblem, which is a contemporary interpretation of the inukshuk—a traditional Inuit sculpture that provides guidance to travellers. The other features the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games emblem, an image that embodies the harmony between athlete, the sport and the environment.
The blue and green colour scheme in the stamps’ background represents the Vancouver 2010 Sea to Sky theme—a concept linking the scenic coastal city with Whistler’s majestic ski slopes. An added dash of creativity makes these domestic definitives extra special. Danielle Trottier, Manager of Stamp Design and Production at Canada Post, explains, “For the first time ever, two different stamps will alternate throughout the same coil.”
The Mascots
The Vancouver 2010 mascots—Miga, Quatchi and Sumi—were inspired by British Columbia’s iconic geography and are rooted in Aboriginal legend. Together, they capture the spirit of Vancouver and Canada.
Sumi*, an animal guardian spirit, is the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic mascot and is found curling on the oversize denomination stamp. Miga is a sea bear who transforms from orca whale to white Kermode bear. She shows off her ski tricks on the US rate stamp. Quatchi, a shy, adventurous sasquatch, plays hockey on the international rate stamp.
The stamps’ designers, Naomi Broudo and Violet Finvers of Vancouver’s Tandem Design, were quickly drawn in by these whimsical creatures. “We really enjoyed getting acquainted with the mascots,” says Broudo. “They’re all so interesting and their energy is contagious; we wanted to use the stamps and souvenir sheet to share this vitality with others.” Their sense of connection with the mascots runs especially deep. “They’re so tied to Canada’s West Coast, as are we,” Broudo elaborates. “From their favourite pastimes to the tradition of First Nation legends that inspired their creation, they really speak to the lively atmosphere and rich history of the region.”
Get acquainted with the mascots and share your Olympic Spirit with the world.

[Information from Germany Post : Translation by Helga]
[English Version]
Today the Gallimarkt in Leer is with about half a million visitors the biggest fair in East Frisia and celebrates from the 8th to the 12th of October, 2008 the 500th anniversary of his first-time happening. The fair takes place every year on the five days after the second Wednesday in October, the day of the holy Gallus. From former days up to now the farmers should have yield for the harvest. In 1508 the sovereign of East Frisia, Count Edzard (born in 1461 and died on the 14th of February, 1528 ), obtained Leer the rights to have a fair. Originally the fair to "Gallus" was a cattle market. Nevertheless, it won on and on in meaning and developped, finally, to Leer`s most popular fair , also well-known wide outside Leer.
